Finding the most comprehensive care is one of the most important steps for patients living with a food allergy.

For decades the management of food allergy has been the complete avoidance of the offending allergen coupled with carrying an Epinephrine autoinjector. While avoidance is perceived as a safe approach, it has its limitation of improving patients’ quality of life and having the sense of control over their health.

Food allergy imposes restrictions on patients and their caregivers. It can be a life-limiting condition given the burden of the perceived risks of accidental ingestion. This burden can drive variable levels of anxiety and social limitations.

Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is an emerging approach to the treatment of patients with food allergy. It involves taking small doses of an allergenic food daily. This process allows patients to gradually be desensitized (less allergic) to the food and tolerate it in their diet.

With OIT, a majority of patients will achieve a level of tolerance to a daily dose of the allergen, that will be sufficient to provide protection against trace exposure, while a sizable proportion of patients will be able to tolerate a full serving

There is inadequate reliable communication between patients, families and healthcare professionals about oral immunotherapy, often accompanied by misinformation. This should be addressed through shared decision-making, and access to trustworthy, clear and transparent information. Bégin et al. Allergy Asthma Clin Immunol (2020)
